What is the IP & BP in the Internal Combustion Engine?
Answer
Indicated Power (IP) is the total theoretical power generated by combustion inside the cylinder, while Brake Power (BP) is the actual usable power available at the engine's crankshaft.
Not all the power generated inside the engine reaches the wheels. The expanding gases produce Indicated Power (IP). However, friction between the piston and cylinder, and power required to drive water pumps and alternators, consumes some of this power (Friction Power, FP). The remaining, useful mechanical power measured at the output shaft using a dynamometer is the Brake Power (BP). .
