Differentiate between water tube and fire tube boiler?

Answer

In water-tube boilers, water flows inside the tubes while hot gases surround them, whereas in fire-tube boilers, hot gases flow inside the tubes surrounded by water.

This fundamental structural difference dictates their use. Water-tube boilers (e.g., Babcock & Wilcox) can safely withstand extreme pressures (over 100 bar) because pressure is contained within small tubes; they are used in power plants. Fire-tube boilers (e.g., Cochran) are limited to low pressures (up to 25 bar) as the pressure acts on a large outer shell, making them suitable for small industrial heating.
