Rolling is a massive industrial deformation process where metal is squeezed between heavy rotating cylinders to reduce its thickness, improve grain structure, and produce continuous plates or sheets.
The Rolling Process: Rolling is the most extensively used primary metal forming process in the world, responsible for producing the vast majority of all metal products, from thick structural I-beams to ultra-thin aluminum foil. It operates on the principle of plastic deformation under immense compressive stress.
A hot or cold metal ingot is forcibly drawn by friction into the gap between two massive, heavy-duty cylindrical rollers that are rotating in opposite directions. The gap between these rollers is deliberately set to be smaller than the initial thickness of the incoming metal. As the metal is dragged through, it is brutally squeezed, resulting in a permanent reduction in thickness and a corresponding proportional increase in length (and slightly in width).
- Hot Rolling: Performed above the metal's recrystallization temperature (glowing red hot). The metal is highly malleable, requiring less massive force. The brutal squeezing crushes the coarse, weak cast grain structure and forces it to recrystallize into a much finer, stronger, and more uniform grain structure. Used for heavy railway tracks, construction beams, and thick steel plates.
- Cold Rolling: Performed at room temperature, usually on metal that has already been hot rolled. It requires colossal force. The grains are permanently elongated and severely strain-hardened, resulting in a product with incredible strength, exceptional surface finish, and extremely tight dimensional tolerances. Used for car body panels, filing cabinets, and appliances.
