Q2Basic Mechanical Engineering
Question
Describe with figure different type of belt drive.
Answer
Belt drives transmit rotary motion and power between parallel shafts using a flexible band, primarily classified into Open and Cross belt drives.
Belt drives rely entirely on friction to transmit mechanical power between pulleys. - Open Belt Drive: The belt passes around the pulleys without crossing. It is used when both shafts must rotate in the exact same direction. The slack side is always kept on top to maximize the angle of contact. - Cross Belt Drive: The belt crosses over itself in an 'X' pattern between the pulleys. This strictly forces the driven shaft to rotate in the opposite direction to the driving shaft. It offers a higher angle of lap (more grip) but suffers from heavy frictional wear where the belts physically cross.
