A residential building comprises two main parts: the Sub-structure (foundation) below ground and the Super-structure (plinth, walls, roof) above ground.
A residential building, designed for human habitation, is a complex assembly of numerous structural and non-structural components. Each component serves a highly specific function, contributing to the overall stability, durability, weather resistance, and comfort of the structure. Broadly, a building is divided into two primary sections: the Sub-structure (the portion situated beneath the ground level) and the Super-structure (the portion constructed above the ground level).
1. Sub-Structure Components:
- Foundation: This is the most critical component of the entire building. It is the lowest artificially prepared part of the structure which is in direct contact with the earth. Its primary function is to safely receive the massive dead and live loads from the super-structure and distribute them evenly over a large area of the subsoil below, ensuring the soil's safe bearing capacity is not exceeded. Strip footings, isolated column footings, and mat foundations are common types.
2. Super-Structure Components:
- Plinth: The plinth is the dividing line between the sub-structure and super-structure. It is the portion of the wall between the ground level and the ground floor level. Its main function is to elevate the ground floor above the surrounding land to prevent rainwater and environmental moisture from entering the building.
- Damp Proof Course (DPC): A continuous layer of highly impermeable material (like rich cement concrete, bitumen, or asphalt) laid at the plinth level. It acts as a barrier, preventing capillary action from drawing moisture up from the wet soil into the walls, which would otherwise cause dampness and degradation.
- Walls and Columns: These are the primary vertical load-bearing members. Walls enclose the building, providing privacy, security, and protection against the elements (temperature, rain, wind). They transmit the load from the roof and floors down to the foundation. Partition walls divide the interior space into rooms.
- Floors: Horizontal elements that provide a flat, solid, and clean surface for occupants and furniture. A floor typically consists of a structural sub-floor (like an RCC slab) and a decorative floor finish (tiles, marble, or wood).
- Doors, Windows, and Ventilators: Essential openings in the walls. Doors provide secure access between spaces. Windows and ventilators provide critical natural lighting, cross-ventilation, and visual connection to the outside environment.
- Sills, Lintels, and Sunshades (Chajja): A sill is the bottom horizontal member of a window frame. A lintel is a reinforced structural beam placed horizontally across the top of an opening (door or window) to support the heavy weight of the wall directly above it. Sunshades project outwards above windows to block direct sunlight and driving rain.
- Stairs/Lifts: The vertical transportation system of the building, connecting different floor levels.
- Roof: The uppermost covering of the building. It is the primary shield against all weather conditions—rain, snow, intense sun, and wind. Roofs can be flat (RCC slabs) or pitched (sloping trusses with tiles/sheets).
