Q.9. What is the difference between grid station and substation?

Answer

A grid station is a major high-voltage transmission substation that interconnects bulk transmission lines and steps voltage down for onward regional distribution, whereas a substation (in general) is any facility that transforms/switches voltage levels, ranging from small distribution substations to large grid stations.

A grid station specifically refers to a large, high-voltage substation situated at the transmission level, serving as a key node interconnecting bulk transmission lines from multiple generating sources and stepping voltage down (e.g., from 400 kV/220 kV to 132 kV/66 kV) for onward distribution to a wider region, often with grid-forming/meshed interconnections to multiple other grid stations for reliability. A substation is the more general term encompassing any facility performing voltage transformation and/or switching functions at any level of the power system — including much smaller distribution substations that step voltage down from sub-transmission levels (e.g., 33 kV) to the final utilization/distribution voltage (11 kV, 415 V) serving a local area — so a grid station can be considered a specific, larger-scale category within the broader general term 'substation.'
