The Information Technology Act, 2000 (amended 2008) provides legal recognition to electronic records and digital signatures, defines cyber crimes and penalties, and establishes regulatory bodies for cyber security and electronic governance.
The features of the I.T. Act (2000, with major amendments in 2008) include: legal recognition of electronic records and digital/electronic signatures, making e-commerce and e-governance transactions legally valid; provisions for prevention of computer-related crimes such as hacking, data theft, identity theft and cyber terrorism, with defined penalties and punishments; establishment of the Cyber Appellate Tribunal and Controller of Certifying Authorities to regulate digital signature certification; provisions for protection of sensitive personal data; and facilitation of electronic filing of documents with government agencies, promoting e-governance.
