Q1Indian Constitution
Question
Q.1. [CO1] (K1) Define Democracy and Socialism.
Answer
Democracy is a system of government where power rests with the people, exercised directly or through elected representatives; socialism is an economic-political ideal emphasizing state/collective ownership of resources to reduce inequality.
Democracy is a form of government in which supreme power is vested in the people, who exercise it either directly or through freely elected representatives, and which guarantees fundamental rights, periodic elections, and rule of law. Socialism is a political and economic philosophy advocating that key means of production, distribution and resources should be owned or regulated by the community/state rather than private individuals, aiming to reduce economic inequality and ensure social justice. The Preamble of the Indian Constitution describes India as a 'Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic', combining both principles.
