[CO2] Explain the concept of human development.

Answer

Human development is a process of enlarging people's choices — to lead long, healthy, and creative lives — measured by the Human Development Index (HDI) covering health, education, and standard of living.

  • Health: Measured by life expectancy at birth
  • Education: Measured by mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling
  • Standard of Living: Measured by Gross National Income (GNI) per capita (PPP $)

  • Equity: Equal opportunities for all, regardless of gender, class, caste, or ethnicity
  • Sustainability: Ensuring current development does not compromise future generations
  • Productivity: Enhancing human capabilities and participation in productive activities
  • Empowerment: Enabling people to make decisions that affect their lives
