Metallic bonds are characterized strictly by a massive, delocalized 'sea of free electrons' which fundamentally provides metals with phenomenal electrical/thermal conductivity and highly unique non-directional malleability and ductility.

In a solid metal lattice, the outermost valence electrons are totally detached from their specific parent atoms, forming a highly mobile, delocalized 'electron gas' surrounding massive positive metal ions.

  • High Conductivity: These completely free, highly mobile electrons can violently accelerate instantly under a tiny applied electric field or massive thermal gradient, physically carrying enormous amounts of electrical current and thermal energy.
  • Malleability and Ductility: Unlike highly rigid, strictly directional covalent bonds, the metallic bond is entirely non-directional. If immense physical stress is applied, entire geometric planes of positive metal ions can easily physically slide completely past one another without actually shattering the overall binding electron cloud, allowing the solid metal to be hammered thin or drawn into wire.
