Q.1 Define active and passive elements.

Answer

Active elements can independently generate and deliver electrical energy continuously, whereas passive elements can only consume, dissipate, or temporarily store electrical energy within a circuit.

In basic electrical engineering, circuit components are fundamentally classified based on their ability to deliver or absorb energy over an infinite time period.

  • Active Elements: These components are fully capable of supplying continuous electrical power to a circuit independently. They act as energy sources. Common examples rigorously include independent voltage sources, independent current sources, batteries, and electrical generators.
  • Passive Elements: These components are inherently incapable of generating electrical energy. They solely receive energy, which they either permanently dissipate as physical heat (like resistors) or temporarily store in electric/magnetic fields (like capacitors and inductors respectively).
