The Steam Emulsion Number (SEN) is defined as the time in seconds required for an emulsion of oil and water to break and separate into distinct layers. The emulsion is standardly created by passing steam through the lubricating oil.

A good lubricating oil (especially for steam turbines) should have a low SEN, meaning it separates from water rapidly, preventing sludge formation and loss of lubricating properties.
