What is the significance of Saponification value of a lubricant?

Answer

The saponification value helps to determine the proportion of animal or vegetable fatty oils present in a compounded lubricating oil.

Since pure mineral oils do not saponify (their saponification value is zero), this test is used to detect adulteration of mineral oils with fatty oils and to ascertain the exact composition of blended lubricants.
