Define hard water and soft water.
Answer
Hard water does not easily form lather with soap due to dissolved calcium and magnesium salts, while soft water readily forms lather.
Hard Water: Water which does not produce lather easily with soap but forms a white scum or precipitate is called hard water. This is due to the presence of dissolved bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates of calcium and magnesium.
Soft Water: Water which readily produces a good amount of lather with soap is called soft water. It is free from dissolved calcium and magnesium salts.
