Q.8. What is the difference between open belt and cross belt?

Answer

Open belt drives rotate shafts in the same direction, while cross belt drives reverse the direction of rotation.

Open Belt Drive: The belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the top of the other, meaning both the driving and driven shafts rotate in the identical direction. It is suitable for shafts that are far apart. Cross Belt Drive: The belt is twisted, crossing over itself. This forces the driven shaft to rotate in the exact opposite direction to the driving shaft. The twist increases the angle of contact (lap angle), allowing higher power transmission, but causes heavy wear where the belts rub against each other.
