Q.5. Write short notes on the following: (i) ELCB (ii) SFU

Answer

ELCBs detect life-threatening earth leakages to prevent electric shocks, while SFUs combine heavy-duty switching with fuses for robust short-circuit protection.

(i) Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB): An ELCB is a critical safety device utilized in electrical installations with high earth impedance to prevent devastating electrical shocks. Its primary, singular purpose is to detect tiny stray currents leaking to the earth (ground) from an electrical installation and immediately interrupt the power supply. There are two primary types: Voltage-operated and Current-operated (now universally superseded by RCCBs). When a live wire accidentally touches the metallic casing of a grounded appliance, a small leakage current flows to the earth. If this leakage reaches a dangerous threshold (typically 30mA, sufficient to cause fatal fibrillation in humans), the ELCB's internal relay violently trips the main breaker contacts within milliseconds, totally isolating the faulty circuit and saving human lives. It does not provide protection against overloads.

(ii) Switch Fuse Unit (SFU): A Switch Fuse Unit is a traditional, highly robust, combined electrical component extensively used in low-voltage industrial distribution panels. It physically integrates a manual load-break switch and a set of heavy-duty High Rupturing Capacity (HRC) fuses into a single compact metal enclosure. The manual switch mechanism provides a safe, visible means of isolating the downstream circuit for maintenance work, while the HRC fuses provide utterly reliable protection against massive short-circuits and severe sustained overloads. They are widely used as the main incomer switches for large industrial machinery or factory sub-panels due to their exceptional ruggedness and fail-safe fuse protection.
