Explain working principle of induction motor.
Answer
An induction motor operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction driven by a Rotating Magnetic Field.
When a 3-phase AC supply is connected to the stator windings, it creates a Rotating Magnetic Field (RMF) that spins at synchronous speed. This RMF sweeps across the stationary rotor conductors, inducing an EMF according to Faraday's Law. Because the rotor circuit is closed, a large current flows through it. According to Lorentz force, the interaction between the stator's RMF and the rotor's current-carrying conductors produces a mechanical torque, dragging the rotor to spin in the same direction as the RMF.
