Space Vector Modulation (SVM) is a PWM technique for controlling a three-phase voltage source inverter that represents the three-phase output voltages as a single rotating space vector in a two-dimensional (alpha-beta) complex plane, and synthesizes the desired reference voltage vector at each switching instant by time-averaging the two nearest adjacent active inverter switching-state vectors together with a zero vector. SVM achieves a higher maximum fundamental output voltage and lower harmonic distortion than conventional sinusoidal PWM for the same DC bus voltage, making it the preferred modulation strategy in most modern high-performance AC motor drives.
