Bluetooth is a short-range (typically up to 10-100 meters depending on class), low-power wireless communication standard operating in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band, using frequency-hopping spread spectrum (rapidly switching among 79 channels many times per second) to minimize interference with other devices sharing the same band. Bluetooth devices form small ad-hoc networks called piconets, in which one device acts as master and up to seven other devices act as slaves, with multiple piconets able to interconnect into a larger scatternet.
Key features include low power consumption (making it suitable for battery-powered portable devices), automatic device discovery and pairing, built-in security through authentication and encryption, and support for both data and voice/audio profiles. Common applications include wireless headsets and earphones (audio streaming), wireless keyboards and mice, file transfer between smartphones and computers, hands-free car communication systems, wireless speakers, and, in its low-energy variant (Bluetooth Low Energy, BLE), fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other Internet-of-Things sensor devices requiring very long battery life with only occasional, small data transfers.
