A fault current limiter (FCL) is a device connected in series with a power system that presents very low impedance under normal operation but rapidly increases its impedance to limit the prospective fault current magnitude when a short circuit occurs.
FCLs may be superconducting, solid-state (thyristor-based), or reactor-type. They reduce the stress on circuit breakers and switchgear, allow use of lower-rated equipment, and improve system reliability during fault conditions.
