Challenges associated with wave energy include the highly variable, irregular, and often severe wave/sea-state conditions that make device design for both efficient energy capture and structural survivability during storms difficult, high capital and maintenance cost in the harsh marine environment (corrosion, biofouling), lack of a single dominant, proven technology design (unlike wind turbines, many competing wave energy converter concepts remain at early commercial stages), difficulty and cost of subsea electrical grid connection, and potential impact on marine ecosystems and navigation/fishing activity.
