Answer
In a thermal power plant, the boiler converts the chemical energy of fuel (coal, oil, or gas) into thermal energy by combustion, using this heat to convert feedwater into high-pressure, high-temperature steam that is then supplied to the steam turbine to produce mechanical energy (subsequently converted to electrical energy by the coupled generator) - the boiler is thus the central heat-generation and steam-production component that initiates the entire thermal-to-mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion chain in a conventional fossil-fuel steam power plant.
