Load equalization is used in drives with widely fluctuating load torque (e.g., punching presses, rolling mills, reciprocating compressors) to smooth out the highly variable power drawn from the supply. A flywheel is mounted on the motor shaft to store kinetic energy during light-load intervals and release it during peak-load intervals, allowing the motor itself to be rated for the average power demand rather than the much larger peak demand, reducing motor size, cost, and supply-line current fluctuation.
