The main components of an electric drive system are the electric motor, power modulator (power-electronic converter), control unit, sensing/feedback devices, and the mechanical load, all working together to convert and regulate electrical power into the desired mechanical motion.
An electric drive system comprises: the electric motor (the electromechanical energy conversion device — DC, induction, or synchronous motor — that actually produces mechanical torque and motion); the power modulator/converter (power-electronic circuitry, such as a chopper, inverter, or rectifier, that converts and regulates the electrical supply into the voltage/current/frequency waveform required by the motor); the control unit (typically a microcontroller, DSP, or dedicated control IC implementing the desired control algorithm, such as PID or vector control, generating the appropriate switching/firing signals for the power modulator); sensing and feedback devices (such as tachogenerators, encoders, or current/voltage sensors, providing the measured speed, position, or current feedback needed for closed-loop control); and the mechanical load itself (the driven machinery — a pump, conveyor, vehicle wheel, etc. — whose motion the drive system is ultimately controlling).
