A DC drive is a system that uses a DC motor together with a power-electronic converter (chopper or controlled rectifier) and a control unit to provide controlled, variable-speed mechanical motion, working by regulating the DC voltage/current supplied to the motor's armature (and/or field) to control its speed and torque.

A DC drive is an electromechanical system comprising a DC motor, a power-electronic converter (a chopper if supplied from a DC source, or a controlled/phase-fired rectifier if supplied from an AC source), and a control unit, together used to provide precisely controlled, variable-speed mechanical output from an electrical supply. It works by regulating the DC voltage (and in some configurations, also the field current) actually delivered to the motor's armature terminals — since DC motor speed is approximately proportional to armature voltage (for constant field flux) and torque is proportional to armature current, controlling these electrical quantities via the power-electronic converter (itself commanded by the control unit, typically based on a speed or position reference command and, in closed-loop systems, feedback from speed/current sensors) provides direct, continuous control over the motor's mechanical speed and torque output to the driven load.
