Q.7. What is the difference between primary and back-up protection?

Primary protection is the first line of defense, designed to clear a fault within its own designated zone as quickly as possible, while back-up protection operates with an intentional time delay to clear the fault only if the primary protection fails to operate, providing a safety net against relay/breaker failure.
Primary protection is the protection scheme assigned to a specific zone of the power system (a line, transformer, or busbar) as the first and fastest line of defense against faults occurring within that zone, designed to isolate the fault with minimum possible time delay to limit damage and maintain system stability. Back-up protection is a secondary protection scheme that operates only if the primary protection fails to clear the fault (due to relay malfunction, breaker failure, or communication failure), typically implemented either as remote back-up (protection at an adjacent/upstream location that also 'sees' the fault, operating after a deliberate time delay to give the primary protection a chance to act first) or local back-up (a duplicate/independent relay and/or breaker-failure protection scheme at the same location as the primary protection). Back-up protection inherently operates more slowly than primary protection (to maintain time-grading/coordination) and often clears a larger portion of the network than strictly necessary, since it lacks the fine selectivity of the primary scheme, but is essential for ensuring that a fault is eventually cleared even if the first line of defense fails.
