Bulk power grids are the large, interconnected high-voltage transmission networks that transport large blocks of power over long distances from generating stations to load centers, while micro-grids are small, localized networks that can operate connected to or independently (islanded) from the main grid.
A bulk power grid is the large-scale, high-voltage (typically 220 kV and above) interconnected transmission network that carries large quantities of electrical power over long distances from major generating stations to regional load centers, forming the backbone of a national or regional power system, characterized by high reliability requirements, meshed topology and centralized system operator control. A micro-grid, by contrast, is a small-scale, localized power network (serving a campus, community or industrial facility) that integrates local distributed generation (solar, wind, small gensets), storage and loads, capable of operating either connected to the main grid (drawing/exporting power) or in an islanded mode (disconnected, self-sufficient) during main-grid outages, offering improved local resilience and the ability to integrate renewable generation flexibly at the distribution level.
