A grid interactive inverter is a power-electronic device that converts the variable DC output of a renewable energy source (solar PV array) into AC power that is precisely synchronized with the grid's voltage magnitude, frequency and phase angle, enabling the generated power to be fed directly into the utility grid. Its significance lies in eliminating the need for battery storage (reducing system cost), enabling net-metering/feed-in-tariff arrangements for the generator, incorporating anti-islanding protection (automatically disconnecting if the grid supply fails, for safety), and often including MPPT functionality to maximize energy extraction from the source before conversion.
