Q.10. What role do micro grids play during a power outage?

Answer

Microgrids can automatically island themselves from the main grid during an outage and continue supplying local loads using their own distributed generation and storage, maintaining critical power supply and improving overall resilience.

During a main grid outage, a microgrid can detect the disturbance and seamlessly disconnect (island) itself from the utility grid using automatic switchgear, continuing to supply its local critical loads using its own local distributed energy resources — such as rooftop solar, small wind, diesel gensets and battery energy storage systems — without depending on the wider grid. This islanding capability significantly improves resilience and reliability of supply for essential facilities (hospitals, data centers, community shelters), reduces the impact of large-scale blackouts, and once the main grid supply is restored, the microgrid's control system re-synchronizes and reconnects it smoothly back to the grid.
