Energy farming (or energy plantation) is the practice of cultivating fast-growing trees, shrubs and crops specifically for producing biomass fuel/energy, on wasteland or otherwise unused agricultural land.
Energy farming refers to the deliberate cultivation of quick-growing, high-yield plant species (such as eucalyptus, subabul, sugarcane or other short-rotation woody/herbaceous crops) on marginal, degraded or waste land with the specific purpose of harvesting the biomass for use as fuel — either directly by combustion or after conversion to biogas, producer gas or biofuels. It aims to create a continuously renewable, dedicated biomass energy supply chain rather than relying solely on forest or agricultural waste.
