Answer
Sustainable development is development that meets present energy and resource needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, balancing economic growth, environmental protection and social equity.
Sustainable development, as defined by the Brundtland Commission (1987), is 'development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' In the context of power generation, it means meeting today's electricity demand using resources and technologies (renewables, efficient thermal plants, conservation) that do not deplete fossil reserves, degrade the environment, or cause irreversible ecological damage, so that adequate energy resources remain available for posterity.
