Solid dielectrics generally have higher dielectric strength and permittivity, and better mechanical support capability, while liquid dielectrics self-heal after breakdown, fill voids completely, and provide simultaneous cooling, but are prone to contamination.
Solid dielectrics (mica, porcelain, polymers) typically offer high dielectric strength, good mechanical strength (serving as structural supports), and stable permittivity, but a puncture/breakdown in a solid is permanent and irreversible, and solids may contain voids where partial discharges begin. Liquid dielectrics (transformer oil, synthetic esters) conform to and completely fill the space between electrodes eliminating air gaps, are self-healing after a transient breakdown (the liquid flows back and recovers its strength), and simultaneously serve as cooling media by convection; however, their dielectric strength is more sensitive to contamination (moisture, particles) and deteriorates with aging/oxidation, requiring periodic testing and filtration in service.
