The heating time constant (T) of an electrical machine is defined as the time taken for the temperature rise to reach 0.632 (i.e., 1-1/e) of its final steady-state value, when heating occurs at a constant loss with the machine's initial temperature equal to ambient. It characterizes the thermal response speed of the machine: T = (thermal capacity, in J/°C) / (heat dissipation coefficient, in W/°C), and larger machines with greater thermal mass generally have longer time constants, meaning they heat up (and cool down) more slowly.
