Answer
A synchro is an electromechanical transducer that converts angular shaft position into a set of AC voltages, used in pairs (transmitter-receiver) for remote position sensing and error detection in servo systems.
A synchro is a rotary electromagnetic device resembling a small three-phase machine, having a single-phase rotor winding and a three-phase stator winding (Y-connected, 120° apart). When the rotor is excited by an AC reference voltage, it induces voltages in the stator windings whose relative magnitudes depend on the rotor's angular position, following an approximate cosine law. A synchro transmitter and a synchro control transformer are connected in a synchro pair to generate an error voltage proportional to the angular misalignment between the transmitter shaft and the receiver shaft, making synchros a key error-detecting element in position control servomechanisms such as radar antenna and gun-control systems.
