What is the difference between polar-type potentiometers and co-ordinate type potentiometers.

Answer

Polar potentiometers measure magnitude and phase angle directly, while coordinate potentiometers measure in-phase and quadrature components separately.

Both are types of AC potentiometers, but they define the voltage vector differently:

- Polar-type Potentiometer (e.g., Drysdale): Measures the unknown voltage directly in polar form (). It uses one slide wire for magnitude and a phase-shifting transformer to determine the phase angle .

- Coordinate-type Potentiometer (e.g., Gall-Tinsley): Measures the voltage in rectangular coordinates (). It contains two separate potentiometers: one measures the in-phase component () and the other measures the quadrature component (, exactly out of phase).
