Describe A/D converter using voltage to frequency and voltage to time conversion.

Answer

Voltage-to-frequency ADC converts analog voltage to a proportional frequency pulse train; voltage-to-time ADC measures the time for a ramp to cross the input voltage, then counts clock pulses in that time.

  • Advantages: high noise rejection (integrating behavior), simple, low cost
  • Disadvantage: slower conversion speed (limited by gate time T)

  • Excellent noise rejection due to integration over a full cycle
  • Clock frequency errors cancel (self-correcting)
  • Very accurate but slow (conversion time = T1 + T2)
  • Used in digital multimeters and high-accuracy instruments
