Give two examples of Single celled organisms.

Answer

Single-celled (unicellular) organisms perform all life functions within a single cell; examples include Amoeba proteus and Paramecium caudatum (protozoa), or Escherichia coli (bacterium) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast).

  • Amoeba proteus: a eukaryotic protozoan that moves and engulfs food by pseudopods, reproduces by binary fission.
  • Paramecium caudatum: a ciliated protozoan found in freshwater, uses cilia for locomotion and feeding.
  • Other examples: Euglena (photosynthetic flagellate), Chlamydomonas (green alga), Escherichia coli (bacterium), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast).
