Q3Digital Image Processing

Question

State the difference between image enhancement and image restoration.

Answer

Image enhancement is purely subjective (making an image visually pleasing), while image restoration is purely objective, utilizing rigid mathematical models to violently reverse physical degradation like motion blur.

Enhancement (like increasing contrast) has no absolute mathematical truth; it simply caters to the human retina. Restoration relies on exact mathematical physics, calculating the exact Point Spread Function (PSF) of the camera lens to mathematically invert the blur and recover the absolute original uncorrupted image.
