What was the role of the JobTracker in Hadoop 1.x?
Answer
In the primitive Hadoop 1.x architecture, the JobTracker was the absolute centralized master node mathematically responsible for both cluster resource management and MapReduce job scheduling.
The JobTracker was a catastrophic Single Point of Failure and a massive architectural bottleneck. It had to violently track the exact status of 10,000 tasks across the entire cluster while simultaneously managing CPU/RAM resources. If it crashed, the entire massive cluster instantly went dead.
